Use respectful, specific language
Neurodivergent is a broad community term. Autism, ADHD, intellectual disability, learning differences, and other conditions are not interchangeable. A diagnosis also does not automatically determine a child’s educational or regional-center eligibility. Each agency uses its own criteria and assessment process.
Parents do not need a real-estate transaction to contact public agencies. Services are not a feature of a house or neighborhood, and availability should never be promised by an agent. Contact the responsible organization for current eligibility, waitlists, boundaries, accommodations, fees, and schedules.
Four useful starting points
Irvine Unified School District
IUSD’s Special Education Department publishes information about Child Find, early intervention, autism-specific programs, educationally related mental-health services, the Community Advisory Committee, and parent resources. A family concerned about a student can contact the school psychologist at the child’s school. Private-school families are directed to the neighborhood public school for Child Find questions.
Regional Center of Orange County
RCOC is contracted by California to coordinate services for eligible Orange County residents with developmental disabilities and their families. Its listed supports include early intervention, respite, therapies, behavioral services, transportation, and social recreation, depending on eligibility and individual planning.
City of Irvine Disability Services
The City publishes recreation resources and offers help locating referrals. Its Disability Services contact is 949-724-6637. Program schedules and accommodation procedures can change, so verify directly before relying on an activity.
Family education and advocacy
IUSD’s Community Advisory Committee provides public meetings and education for parents of students with an IEP or 504 plan. Families may also seek an independent parent-training organization or qualified advocate when they want help understanding procedures.
A practical call sheet
- Write down the child’s strengths, needs, and the settings where difficulty occurs.
- Ask which agency is responsible for the concern.
- Request eligibility criteria and next steps in writing.
- Keep copies of assessments, plans, correspondence, and contact names.
- Ask about interpretation and reasonable accommodations when needed.

- For an urgent safety or medical concern, use the appropriate emergency or healthcare service.
